Scientific Programmer (f/m/d)

The position is initially offered for two years with a start date as soon as possible and the option to be made permanent afterwards. The salary is according to class EG 12 TV-L.

Your Tasks:

The successful candidate will join the department Modelling of Atmospheric Processes, where the focus is on developing the weather and climate model ICON for applications in the mesosphere and thermosphere. The simulations are mainly performed at the computing systems of the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ). A local computing centre is also available. The main tasks will be implementing new code components into the model, either directly or through modern coupling interfaces, performance analysis and code debugging, and guiding production runs from the setup to the analysis stage. The successful candidate will also be responsible for managing the code branches and keeping them synchronized with the master branch, which is managed by the German Meteorological Service (DWD).

Your Qualifications / Experience:
  • completed university degree (bachelor's degree or comparable) in informatics, mathematics, physics, geosciences or a related field with preferably very good results
  • strong interest in High Performance Computing on CPUs and GPUs
  • experience with simulations on supercomputers producing large volumes of data
  • expertise in modern fortran, shell scripting, and processing of simulation data
  • experience in earth system modelling would be desirable
  • good communication skills, ability to work autonomously and self-responsible
  • fluency in English as working language
