Location: St Andrew's Rd, Huddersfield

Salary: PAYE rate: £16.82 - £25.54 per hour, based on experience

Description:

For our Huddersfield site, we're looking for a Materials Science Engineer. This is a 100% on site role with an initial assignment duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension or transition into a permanent contract.

Experience and Qualifications:

1 or 2 years of experience in a similar role is required.
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Engineering, or a relevant discipline is preferred but not necessary.
Previous automotive industry experience would be beneficial but is not mandatory.Ideal Candidate Will Have Experience In:

Aluminium alloys
Failure analysis and/or problem-solving
Industrial experienceJob Description:

This Materials Science Engineer role involves utilising knowledge of materials science and engineering to lead laboratory requests and small projects related to:

Testing and approval of components against internal specification requirements, working with laboratory equipment and external suppliers where required.
Providing feedback to design reviews, utilising materials science knowledge to understand the suitability of materials for various applications.
Conducting failure analysis of test and field components using problem-solving techniques.
Supporting R&D projects related to, but not limited to, aluminium components and their processing.The role requires close interaction, largely virtually, with teams based across the globe in R&D, Platform, Supplier Quality, and Laboratory Operations and Service Engineering. The engineer will provide materials science and engineering guidance with regards to test planning, laboratory techniques, analysis of test samples and data, and providing recommendations to the business in terms of product quality and manufacturing.

Aims of the Position:

Support the materials engineering team Engine Components with laboratory requests relating to, though not limited to, aluminium components and processing technology.
Provide guidance to non-materials science teams on practical solutions and recommendations for materials selection, testing requirements, and failure analysis.
Create robust documentation and best practices for the organisation.Main Duties of the Employee:

Work with internal design teams to conduct materials laboratory work to determine if products meet their specification requirements.
Support supplier quality investigations and provide guidance, plan, and carry out suitable test methods to determine root causes of potential issues.
Conduct failure analysis investigations on tested components.
Maintain and develop databases of materials test data.
Provide Materials Science and Engineering support to other Advanced Engineering (R&D) projects as requested by your line manager.Equipment or Software Knowledge Required:

Knowledge and experience of using materials characterisation equipment, such as metallographic preparation, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office tools.Employee Competencies:

Material characterisation: Interpret mechanical, chemical, micro-structural, and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance and correlate these properties with field or component test results.
Component failure analysis: Analyse specimen properties using laboratory equipment to identify failure modes and mechanisms, evaluate design intent, manufacturing processes, and operational history to determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
